I'm sure you noticed that this digest has been split into two parts. Well, so much mail has built over the past few days, that it became a necessity! :) I've had an incredibly busy weekend (which is why I didn't get a digest out until today). Friday night, my husband and I went to a concert... my husband maintains a web page for one of the bands (Shoveljerk) that performed at the concert (and through an Internet contact, my husband found out that Shoveljerk wanted to meet him and see samples of the web page). My husband met them and showed them the page... and they were impressed! :) Then, on Saturday, my in-laws came up for a visit. On Sunday, I had to work an eight-hour shift, and was just too tired to sit down and put a digest together. Well, even though I put in a seven-and-a-half hour day at work today, I'm still sitting down and doing this (before the mail builds up anymore!!). There's a couple of important things I'd like to bring up here that can (or might, in one instance) directly affect this mailing list. First off, I'm two months pregnant, and the baby is expected to be born sometime in early November (which means that at that point in time, the mailing list will be going on a hiatus... consider this to be a kind of "advance" warning... :)). On another note, though, my husband is trying to look into finding a job in the Seattle area (he's seeing if he can find a job over there within the next couple of months; if this happens, this would involve a move (which means we wouldn't have access to our accounts for a while, until we'd get settled in and join up with an ISP in that area)). Remember, we don't know if we're moving or not, so this hiatus might not happen. However, the pregnancy is *definite*. :) I'll be keeping you all updated if it turns out that my husband and I move to the Seattle area. I'd also like to ask the fan fiction writers to only send one of their stories at a time. Basically, if a writer sends me multiple stories, I'll only upload one story a day (I just don't have the time or the energy right now to do more than one fan fiction story per writer per day). I'd greatly appreciate it if the fan fiction writers could do this for me! :) And remember, if you haven't voted in the TRULY OUTRAGEOUS! Mailing List's Voting Booth, be sure to do it before May 1! You can either follow the link on the mailing list's homepage (http://olivier.dementia.org/~jem/jemlist), or if you don't have web access, you can write to me and ask for a text version of the ballot. Speaking of the web page, it's now received 9,652 hits! :) And the mailing list now has 267 subscribers. Until next time, Holograms... ------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: TRULY OUTRAGEOUS! 2.18 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Christy Marx >Johnny [dpowell@sioux.sodak.net] >I think Maya may have a point too, I never really stopped to look but it >does seem that there are alot of us tomboys in here that loved Jem, >Alyssa [lys@pacbell.net] >last digest (2.17). Somebody was inquiring as to why many tomboys >liked Jem. I was pretty much a tomboy myself. CHRISTY SEZ: This may be no accident. I was a total tomboy. I *hated* dresses. I played in the woods and fields, collected tadpoles, read comic books, dreamed of being Batman, and daydreamed entire fantasy worlds for myself. I still have a lot of "masculine" rather than "feminine" qualities. I study martial arts, ride motorcycles, use guns and bows, and dislike anything too frilly or prissy. Since the characters came out of my head, I'm sure they conveyed a lot of my general outlook on life and my own independence and aggressiveness. >Crissy [Bubb1022@aol.com] >QUESTION: Did the OUTRAGEOUS in "Totally Outrageous!" evolve from >Jerrica getting sick of hearing Kimber say OUTRAGEOUS? She says it >all the time! CHRISTY SEZ: Actually, the use of the word "outrageous" and the phrase "Truly outrageous" were at the request of Hasbro. Someone there came up with these words as catchphrases, probably thinking they'd help sell the dolls, and asked that I have the writers use them consistently. Hasbro was big on having catchphrases for their toy lines. With G.I. Joe it was "Yo, Joe!" (or something like that). ------------------------------------------------------------------- Ask Christy ~~~~~~~~~~~ Jason [mymail@earthlink.net] Christy, I don't know if you are aware of this, but even though in the first season of Jem, Shana was the drummer, the Shana dolls were always packaged with a toy guitar. Was it your decision for the cartoon Shana to be a drummer instead of a guitar player? Or was this something that Hasbro gave you. The possiblity being that Hasbro INTENDED for Shana to come with drums, but changed their minds at some point during production. (My guess, if this is the case, is that Hasbro figured that kids wouldn't know the difference, or wouldn't care.) Also, on a related note, I used to have a xerox from an issue of Muppet Magazine that pictured different musical cartoons, like Alvin & The Chipmunks, Josie & The Pussycats and of course Jem! In the picture however, the instruments were mixed up. Aja is shown playing the drums while Shana has a guitar. It looked like an actual picture from the cartoon, so I was quite confused by the mix up. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Mary where are you? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Grant [gpaplauskas1@juno.com] This is a message for the Mary who was interested in buying my loose Jem doll: Please e-mail me again. I lost your address. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Jem: The Never Ending Story ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Grant [gpaplauskas1@juno.com] Hi Holograms, I don't know if any of you have been following Jem: The Never Ending Story, but we're up to Part 5 now and we need a writer for Part 6. If anyone is interested in writing Part 6, Please E-Mail Me! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: TRULY OUTRAGEOUS! 2.17 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Maggie [NDCM79E@prodigy.com] Christy sez: >> How did your sister come by this production cel? Christy, count me in as a cel owner. I bought two at a collectibles show several years ago. The guy didn't really know what they were (toy & collectible dealers are notoriously clueless about JEM; they only know about guys' toys!) so they were only $20 each. Both were from the "Intrigue at the Indy 500" episode. A guy I know in California bought a couple dozen of them at a collectibles show some years ago....lots of them are, you know, the backs of people's heads and nothing you'd want to frame, but I think he still has some that he's trading off. Grant wants to know: >> Did Hasbro actually have plans to release the Maxie doll series while >> Jem was still in production? Or, was Maxie just a desperate (yet >> successful) attempt to replace Jem and keep their standing in the doll >> market? Maxie replaced Jem. Hasbro felt that Jem was unsuccessful because she was too glamorous. So they made Maxie, a teenage doll girls could identify more with. I don't think Maxie was very successful. She didn't even stay on the market as long as Jem, as I recall. However, I don't know if you've ever seen the photo of the first (and only) 1988 Jem doll, Rockin' Romance Jem, but it's very interesting that she has Maxie's face instead of the Jem face from '86 and '87. Also she doesn't have Jemstar earrings. She has white drop earrings. Very odd. Perhaps they intended to have Maxie and Jem co-exist before they dropped the Jem product line. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: TRULY OUTRAGEOUS! 2.14 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Maggie [NDCM79E@prodigy.com] Fan fic debate: >> Riot loves a challenge and above all else - he loves mystery. >> Someone that delusional can and will NEVER change. I haven't read any of the fan fic, but I think if the SERIES had continued you would have seen Riot change to some extent. He was already well on his way to becoming a sympathetic character. Above all, JEM is essentially a soap opera, a continuing story. I think we all agree that the stories that advance the characters' lives are our favorites, over and above the "formula" episodes where the Misfits try to mess things up for the Holograms but the Holograms triumph in the end. Well, anyway, it's an old soap opera writing trick to bring a new character on and make him totally despicable in the beginning and then gradually make him more sympathetic to the audience until he's an audience favorite. I think that's the way the scripts were going when the series ended. The "Riot's Hope" episode was the one that made him more human and not so obnoxious. I firmly believe you would've seen more of that. Jem & Madonna: Being new to the list, I don't know if the parallels between Jem and Madonna have been discussed ad nauseum. (I know it's a subject that's gone on endlessly among my own circle of Jem friends.) But does anyone see the parallel between reaction to Jem's Academy Award nomination ("how dare you call yourself an actress! you haven't studied for years and years!") and the Academy's snub of Madonna for "Evita"? I mean, she was wonderful, the whole movie was wonderful, it was the most incredible thing out there this year, but the Academy didn't consider her performance "acting". They saw her as a singer making a singing movie. :( Major bummer. Anyway, it's just another in the long list of Madonna/Jem parallels. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: TRULY OUTRAGEOUS! 2.15 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Maggie [NDCM79E@prodigy.com] Dan lists the bloopers: I always thought it was odd that *JEM* made up with Rio at the end of "The Stingers Hit Town". Shouldn't it have been Jerrica making up with him instead? Also, I wonder if at some point during the series Rio came to the realization that Jerrica and Jem were the same person. He thought it early on ("Broadway Magic") but then was convinced otherwise. But how could he NOT figure it out again later, especially when Jem and Jerrica disappeared at the same time in "The Day The Music Died"? Did he figure it out and just decide to play along until the time was right? Alexandra says: >> After carefully following the Jem episodes, especially the one "Out >> of the Past," I've determined that Jerrica was born in 1965, Kimber >> in '66 or '67--it doesn't say how far apart the two girls are. Yes, that's about what I figured. Since Rio was already out of college and Jerrica hadn't gone, and Rio was a year older than Jerrica (he could be done with college at age 22), and Eric Raymond called her "just a kid" (and you wouldn't say that about someone who was 22 or older), I figured she had to be 21. I had Kimber pegged for 18, since she was out of high school already, but obviously quite a bit younger (and more immature) than the other girls, and in "Out of the Past" she's shown much littler than Jerrica. It always amused me that Jerrica hadn't gone to college. And yet she was running this multi-million dollar company and doing the tax returns herself and all that! >> I've also determined that the Stingers most likely showed up in >> 1987. I use this timeline in my stories. Well, "The Stingers Hit Town" was first broadcast in January 1988. I know that for sure, as I was taping the show during its first run. Martijn says: >> I was wondering, does anyone remember the JEM comic books that were >> released? In Holland, there were quit a few issues released. A friend of mine swears he had some from Mexico, too. There were never any released in the U.S. :( Which seems odd, since Marvel was involved. If you ever find any at old comic book stores, let me know. I probably have something good on JEM I could trade you for them. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ON A QUEST FOR JEM! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Steve [swilliams@logiscitcs.calibersys.com] Hi Holograms! Just wanted to write in and say that after printing out every back issue of the digest and reading them over the weekend, I have become obsessed with obtaining JEM memorabilia! I went to every video store in my area and found five of the nine videos that were produced for sale. One of the ones I cannot find ( and that everyone in past digests say is the easiest to find ) is "Hot Time In Hawaii". I baby-sat for three of my nieces and we watched all the JEM's and I explained to them all about the show and how it represented an era called the 1980's! Well, my nieces loved the show and the music and want to see more as do I. If anyone can help me with this, please e-mail me. I would appreciate it and it would expose JEM to another generation. I read the JEM fiction about "Rapture Comes Out" and "Kimber's Big Date" as they seemed to have generated the most positive/negative responses. I enjoyed them very much and now plan to read more of the fiction and maybe submit some of my own. I have looked for the Belltower CD (no luck), but have several CD stores looking for it for me. I am now interested in collecting the JEM dolls. I don't need them to still in their boxes (as I would like to display them), but would like them to come complete with all fashions that came with them and the tapes! Please e-mail me privately if you know where I can obtain any of the JEM dolls. I think Leslie has done a remarkable job putting this digest together over the last year (especially with graduating school and getting married) and it was fascinating seeing how the digest progressed over the months. I look forward to the anniversary issue and other digests to come! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: TRULY OUTRAGEOUS! 2.18 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Johnny [dpowell@sioux.sodak.net] just a quick note to Christy :) in response to "no credit, no thanks, and not a penny" WE thank you christy :) you were the major part in creating a world we all loved and felt better being in , if only for a small time each day. all of us here will remember and know who you are and what you did for the series and be forever thankful. :) And BaNee was my favorite starlight girl :) btw ------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: TRULY OUTRAGEOUS! 2.18 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ El Tornado [vrviper2@juno.com] WOW! I have to give thanks to Derek for giving that insight on Roxy last digest. I myself, could never figure out why she was there, which wouldn't have bothered me, except that I grew very annoyed every time she popped up. I gave little effort to trying to figure out why (was she ugly? stupid? no, she's quite attractive and smart as a whip...), but I think you've hit the nail on the head. Now, when I watch Jem, I can growl and boo at Roxy with a clear conscience. Now, I know WHY I despise her! Of course, I actually enjoyed seeing her on Roxy Rumbles. But then again, there's an impolite saying about the sun and a dog's behind that I will not use to describe how I feel about that one instance. Sure, she was great on that, but I still want to push her down a flight of stairs. Along with Kimber, who's flaws you have also brought out into the open. I think it would have been interesting if Rio blew up on her more often than he did. There are only a few moments in Jem that give me as much pleasure as the moment Rio made Kimber run away in tears. I can't get enough Kimber bashing. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Jem dolls for sale ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Janet [elzid23@mail.gte.net] Hi, Holograms, I guess it pays to put out a "wanted ad" , the following lady contacted me with more Jems for sale. There was no phone number. All are NRFB: Danse, Clash, Jetta, Kimber, Aja,Video Krissie, Banee $45 plus UPS Rio, Glitter/Gold Rio, & Jem,Jem Rock and Curl Synergy NRFB $35 plus UPS Roxy $60 plus UPS She will take MO or check Shirley Phillips 1825 BIG ROAD GILBERTSVILLE PA 19525-9636 ------------------------------------------------------------------- Jem Pictures ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Grant [gpaplauskas1@juno.com] Hi Everyone, In the last issue I mentioned the fact that I have images of Jem on my computer. Yes this is true. I really appreciate all of the responses on how to create a Jem desktop theme. However, I have no way of sharing these with anyone. I don't have internet access and my E-mail does not support atttachments. The only way I have to send images is by snail mail. Plus, these images are not mine to give out. I am working on creating a desktop theme with one other member of the digest. If this idea comes to fruition, it will be shared with other Holograms. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Ever notice that.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Caroline [vnutter@gncom.com] Hi everyone! Did you ever notice that Jem and the Holograms never actually got PAID to do a concert? I think that every performance they did was some kind of benefit, contest, or personal favor to someone. They did get a check for doing their movie, but that went straight to Bonee's eye operation. Can anyone prove me wrong on this? Also, I remember last year that someone on the mailing list was going to throw a Jem get-together down in Florida. Did this actually ever happen? Is there anyone living along the Canadian/American border that would be interested in hosting one of these? I would in a second, but my place is waaaay to small. If anyone is interested, I'd be more than willing to help out! ------------------------------------------------------------------- MESSAGE FROM KRISTA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Krista [jgowe@mb.sympatico.ca] Hi- I'm not really on the list (I just print stuff off the archives) but I'd like the chance to write in to the digest nevertheless. 1) I'm not sure how you feel about posting things for sale/trade on this list - since there seems to be quite a bit of it going on, couldn't we figure out a way to post a JEM classified sub-section or bulletin board to inform eachother of what is out there and who wants what (cartoon shows, dolls, tapes, etc, etc)? I wish I could handle the task myself, but I am so computer illiterate-maybe if the idea is tossed out there someone will take an interest in maintaining such an area...? Is it illegal? (ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTE: When it comes to the dolls, it wouldn't be illegal (or for the ORIGINAL copies of the audio or video tapes). However, something like that would have to be maintained on a very regular basis. I personally don't have the time to keep something like this up-to-date. However, if someone else would like to try their hand at something like this, they're more than free to make an attempt! If you don't wish to pay your local ISP for space on the web server, simply contact geocities (www.geocities.com) and arrange a free account with them.) 2)Is the voice of "The Cryptkeeper" from "Tales From the Crypt" Techrat's voice? Has anyone else noticed this? They sound awfully similar. (not the cartoon, the live action show). I guess that's all for now; VIVA JEM! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Hopelessly Devoted... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jason [mymail@earthlink.net] I have been a subscriber to this digest for a long time now (quite a switch from all those letters that say "I am a new subscriber..." Why should all the new guys have all the fun?:-)) and I have just recently begun to realize just how much Jem really meant to me. I mean I always knew that I LOVED Jem very much! It is undoubtably my favorite TV show ever, for a variety of reasons. Obviously the writting was superb (Fantastic work, Christy!), the songs were unforgetable, and all of the characters seemed so real, they felt like real friends! But there has to be more to it than that! There are so many quality programs out there (along with a lot of worthless junk), why does this one remain so strongly and indelibly a major part of my life ten years after it ended? Like I said, I have been think a lot about this lately. I was in middle school when Jem came into my life. I had NO friends outside of school. There were people I could talk with in class or at lunch but that was really it. This was mainly because I went to school with "rich kids" whose parents were lawyers and doctors. They all wore designer clothes and were "hip", whereas I certainly was not. My parents didn't understand this at all, so I didn't get fifty dollar jeans or fancy shirts. I still had to wear hand-me-downs from my dad's teenaged cousins or things my grandmother made. My parents didn't really care about me, as harsh as that sounds, but they were busy with their own lives at the time (they were undergoing a trial separation) and I was just too much to worry about. I rarely saw either of them excpet when my dad would take me to school. Jem was very literally ALL I had! The show and it's wonderful characters meant the world to me! I taped every episode and later recorded the songs by holding my cassette recorder up to the TV, as, I have discovered, many other people did. My father didn't care for this at all. I managed to convince my grandmother and aunt to buy me Jem and Rio for Christmas. Unfortunately, my aunt along with other relative tormented me verbally for playing with dolls. My father constantly asked me "You really like that crap?" whenever I would listen to my crude Jem tapes. I wasn't "manly enough" it seems. The guys at school seemd to think the same way (although I certainly kept my Jem fanaticism a secret from them!). It hurt so much, because no one could ever realize how much I loved Jem! They could never understand my attachment to something like this. It WAS just a cartoon, right? Even though I now have friends I care deeply about, plus a boyfriend I really love, not to mention other important concerns, Jem still means more than I can even explain to me. Watching "A Father Should Be..." recently, especially the video "This Is Farewell" really made me realize just how much this wonderful program impacted my life. At the end where the different groups gathered to wave good-bye to "Ba Nee" (You can't fool me, Christy! I knew they were really waving goodbye to me and the other fans out there!), I completely collapsed. Here I was, a twenty-two year old man, sobbing uncontrolably at a CARTOON! This wasn't Bambi's mother or some other Disney tear-jerker, this was just some syndicated "half-hour doll commercial" from ten years ago! Why on earth did it mean so much to me? I finally realized why. Jem, Shana, Aja and all the others (even the Misfits) gave me unconditional friendship. They were always there for me, to make me smile or just to entertain me with their awesome songs. I didn't have to look or act a certain way or wear expensive clothes for them to like me. Jem was something I could always count on! And I still can! Jem was...IS more than just a defunct doll line or "half-hour commercial". She will always be a close dear friend. Someone to whom I could always turn to and find comfort with. She never asked me for anything or pressured me to change who or what I was. I have many frineds now, with whom I can feel comfortable and and be myself, but Jem was there for me when there was no one else. Christy, you have my undying gratitude for this wonderful project. Even these words cannot fully express how deeply Jem has affected me. To "Jem", you are always there in my heart. Thanks to everyone on this digest for your comradery. I hope I haven't bored anyone. I just felt I needed to epress something that it has taken me ten years to figure out. Bye, now! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Jem dolls! ~~~~~~~~~~ Jon [JonDarien@aol.com] Hello Holigrams, I am a newer member of the mailing list and I love it!! My name is Jonathan Jones and I'm 13. I love Jem and realy want the Jem dolls. If you have any or know where I can get some please E-mail me at JonDarien@aol.com Thank you!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------- fan fiction ~~~~~~~~~~~ Brenna [BMWILLIAMS@ewu.edu] Yep! It's me again! First of all, I meant to respond to the many remarks made about Brenna's and my submissions on Fan fic last month. However, I started student teaching around the time the hiatus lifted and so I haven't had a chance till now. (Praise the Lord for Spring break!) I agree with Deanna. Everyone has a right to the freedom of speech. So I will exercise mine to respond to the many comments on our submissions. Brenna can (and usually does) speak for herself. What I have to say is from MY viewpoint. First I would like to quote something from my last submission dealing with the quality of fan fiction currently on the page. > If you disagree with my comments, feel free to say so. It >is not my intention to attack ANYONE! These are some thoughts I've >had about fan fic in general, and some suggestions for improvement. >You might consider it a challenge to branch out. I deliberately refrained from mentioning names because I wasn't addressing any one person. These were my thoughts in general, about MANY different people's stories. Obviously, I wasn't alone in my feelings. I noticed that there weren't any submissions DISAGREEING with what I had to say. Most of the submissions dealt more with attacking fan fic writers, which I don't feel I did. I also wanted to say welcome back to Derek! You've been quiet for too long, I'dbegun to think that maybe you'd unsubscribed! I, for one, have missed your thought-provoking and intellectual (Can Jem be intellectual?) contributions. As for your latest points, I think I tend to agree with you on the Stormer/Kimber one. You stated quite clearly one of my bones with fan fiction which I brought up several digests ago. But as for Roxy being "a cold-blooded snake, the purest of the Misfits," I'm a little perplexed. I seem to remember you writing in quite some time ago and stating that Jetta was the meanest and nastiest Misfit, with more pure intent to harm etc than any of the other Misfits. I don't remember when it was or which digest. But I'm curious if you still think so, or if you've had a change of heart. Am I wrong in this? I'd be interested in rereading that submission if anyone knows which one it is off hand. As for Caroline's comments (Way back when....) >The digest used to be fun to read, now there seems to be so much >we can't write or see. Actually, I thought it had gotten a little dull. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have sent in my submission. >we all have to do our part to make this digest fun and enjoyable. >I'm sure we all have happy memories of Jem when we were younger, why >not share them? >How did you discover Jem? Did you watch it alone or with friends? >Did youever "play" Jem with your friends? etc etc. >I've met some really cool people through this digest, and I hope to >see it around a while longer. I agree. But, personally, I don't want to read about it on the digest. I was thinking that it would be really fun to have another page where we acan write in with A FEW of our favorite stories from playing Jem. The content would be very different from the fan fiction page because playing dolls is much more spontaneous and has a way of getting out of control. You wouldn't believe some of the stories I played in high school with my best friend! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Bloopers, etc. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lynne [Lynne_Chlala@ridley.on.ca] Hello Holograms! I was reading about the bloopers in the show on Lesley's page (Hi Lesley!!!) and I remembered a few that can be added... -In the Twilight in Paris video in "Kimber's rebellion" - Kimber's hair turns Jem's pink when you see the Holograms (faded) singing "Beautiful when you're in love" -Jem's hair gets longer, then shorter, then longer again at the beginning of "The Beginning" -Jerrica's eyes go all funny when she's giving the "I can't believe my father kept all of this a secret" speech in "The Beginning" This isn't a blooper, but it's just a question... Does anyone else go insane during the first five episodes, during the videos? All they do is rehash the same cells, over, and over, and over and over again! *sigh* Just a little whine from the newbie... Another comment - If anyone has any of the tapes marketed with the Jem merchandise for grabs, send me an email, and I'll send you the contents of my toybox... I have some really interesting stuff in there that hasn't been mangled too much with my playing... Also, If anyone wants a Maxie doll, complete with the green and silver star outfit, send me an email too... Gotta go back to studying now... *sobbing uncontrollably* If only I could afford Kleenex... Take Care! Lynne lynne_chlala@ridley.on.ca PS: James!!! I keep sending you replies but they get sent back to me! What is going on over at Queens, hon? (makes me not want to go there anymore... *wink*) ------------------------------------------------------------------- A Question about Music ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Grace [edk@nortel.ca] I was reading with interest all the mail in the archives about JEM songs and had a question. Is it my imagination or do the Stingers songs have two male voices (one tenor, one bass). The two most obvious songs that come to mind are "Destiny" (two male voices singing same melody in two octaves) and "Under My Spell" (one male singing melody, the other harmony). "Now" and "Believe in Me" also have four voices instead of three. I'm not complaining, I love the voicing as is. I wish they had more music out. I discovered when doing the Voting Booth survey that there are no Stingers songs that I don't like. They're all great. Whoever did the arrangments and instrumentation of the music videos did a great job! ------------------------------------------------------------------- My JEM Production Cel ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shannon [shan@dm.net] Yes, folks, I am now a proud owner of a JEM production cel... for $150 framed. For cels, that's actually fairly cheap. Cel was $100, rest is tax and framing. It was one of three cels in a packet held by Vintage Animation in Santa Monica, CA. They didn't have a lot of stuff on JEM, but the three cels they had available were interesting. They were all "bumper" cells -- you know, the "JEM will return after these messages" stuff. The one I bought is one of the bumper shots they used in early episodes of JEM, a still shot of JEM singing at the mike with the logo to her left and the Holograms drawn in smaller underneath. At the very least, I remember it as one of the few bumpers used when TRULY OUTRAGEOUS! -- the movie version of the first 5 episodes -- ran on TV. The other two cels (which I didn't get) are both bumper shots from JEM's run on SUPER SATURDAY. One features a ROBOTIX machine, a shot of BIGFOOT (the truck), and a head shot of JEM. The other shows A ROBOTIX machhine in the upper left corner and JEM in midair in the upper right corner. Krissie, Deirdre, and Ashley (with their backs to the viewer) reach hands up to cheer JEM on. An interesting note about this production cel -- Ashley's hair is reddish-blond with green highlights! From the design though it's clearly Ashley. They also had some original JEM pre-production drawings, presumably stuff for other bumpers. I recognized at least one other piece of artwork as another of the early bumpers. It looks like one of the early bumper artists might have sold his (or her?) collection off for some reason or other. Getting the cel was more than I'd planned to spend, but production cels aren't easy to find and each is (by nature) one of a kind. My only downside is that the cel shows a little evidence of age damage, but shouldn't be noticeable when framed (the framing matte will help with the edges where the problem is.) I've just always loved this drawing, is all. And now it's mine. :) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Talk about "The Fan" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shelly [imzadi@infinet.com] Anyone out there who has the episode "The fan" and wants to "Talk" about it please email me. My name is Karen and I live in Ontario, Canada. I've been subscribing to the Jem list for a few weeks now but this is my first submission. First I'd like to thank Lesley for putting so much effort into this list! You really do a great job, especially considering you do it on your free time for no money! I started collecting Jem dolls when I was about 9 or 10. I soon became a big fan of the dolls and the show, and my Jem dolls were the only toys I didn't get rid of as I got older! I am so glad I kept them because I'm now experiencing a Jem "revival", and I've pulled out all my dolls and videos, and started looking for them in thrift stores. I collected all of the dolls except for the Misfits, because when I was young I thought it would be wrong to play with them since they were Jem's enemies. (I couldn't endorse their scams against my favorite singer!) Now I'm anxious to complete my collection, so if anyone has a Pizzazz, Stormer, Roxy, Jetta (my fav Misfit!), or Clash that they want to sell then let me know. I'm also missing Glitter and Gold Rio and Flash and Sizzle Jem. Jem has been a great influence in my life because I am an aspiring singer. Right now I'm working as an intern at BMG Records and my goal is to sign a record deal before the end of the year! I wish Hasbro wasn't so anal about their copyrights because I'd love to include a Jem song on my demo! ------------------------------------------------------------------- LOL ~~~ Martijn [sunburst@xs4all.nl] On Saturday i sent out E-Mails to EVERY single public TV broadcasting network in Holland. (well, all except for the really religious ones - LOL). Gave them som info about Jem, where it has been broadcasted before and how many episodes there are. I already got responses from 2 channels that said they weren't gonna broadcast it. Geez, even the channel that broadcasts all the old series from the 80s (like "Fame" and "Love boat") wasn't interrested. LOL what is wrong with mankind? hahahahaha. Well i will keep trying, and i WILL get ALL the Jem episodes on video. LOL. It has become a mission. Oh i keep forgetting; does anyone have pictures of the people who are either; - Pizazz's singing voice; - Jem's singing voice; - Jem's speaking voice I am REALLY wondering what they look like. Responses in private E-Mail, please. :-) Oh i was like... overwhelmed when Miss Marx actually replied to 2 of my questions! Thanks Christy! I'm hitting myself over the head because i actually asked 2 stupid questions. LOL. I still haven't been able to find more Jem episodes though. I should be having tapes coming in from the U.S. right about now. I don't understand why it is SO easy to find rare Janet JAckson videofootage from the 70s (!!) and i can't find lots of Jem episodes from the late eighties. I guess *some* people don't appreciate culture. LOL. Someone said something about Jem turning her car on with the radio. I have a vague memory of SOME cartoon doing that, but i don't know if it's Jem. And also.. I know the Syngergy doll was released but was there also the MACHINE version of Synergy released? (ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTE: Unforunately, no.) I don't remember. It would have been WAY cool if you could have plugged it into the car radio or something and it would give away some lighting effects. YEAH! I know i'm not supposed to ask, but i would *really* love to see the "Starbright" episodes (all 3) and the "Talent search" episodes (i think there are 2). So.. You know.. That was like.. a HINT kinda thing. LOL. Well, i think i've bored you enough, so time for me to go write some more channels about "Jem" and listen to the excellent tape Graham made for me :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------
