Q: "I was wondering if those characters that are
mostly called by various nick names (Zipper, Tech-Rat,
Graphix, etc.) have REAL names. If so what are they?"
A: "Zipper was too inconsequential a character to
bother giving him more of a name than that. Tech-Rat I
wanted to keep mysterious, so I avoided giving him a
name. Graphix had a real name, but since I don't have
a Jem bible handy for reference, I can't tell you what
it is. My memory isn't that good!"
Q: "Was Kimber Benton born Kimber or Kimberly Benton?"
A: "It's Kimber."
Q: "When creating Rio did you make any notes about his
family?"
A: "No, nothing specific."
Q: "Do Jerrica & Kimberly have any living relatives?
Aunts? Uncles? Or was this never specified?"
A: "It was never specified."
From TO! J 4.6 (February 22, 1999)
Q: "In Jem Jam, Ashley dreams as if she were a
singer like Jem? Was that your idea and if it was,
why just have her dream that up out of blue?"
A: "Ashley was a last-minute character creation,
not originally created along with the other
Starlight Girls. The producers liked Ashley and
wanted to keep her. It was simply useful to the
story I wanted in Jem Jam to let Ashley develop
that interest. Also, when you think about it, it
makes sense that one of the girls living in the
same house with a famous rock band would decide to
follow that path."
Q: "I loved the episode "The Princess and the
Singer" but always wondered Kimber was chosen to
be the look alike. Why not Aja, or Shana? Or
even Jem?"
A: "This script had an unusual birth. I was at
the time also writing my own comic book series,
THE SISTERHOOD OF STEEL. A fan started writing to
me, interested in doing a Sisterhood RPG. I was
impressed with this young woman's mode of writing.
Her name is Ellen Guon. She wrote this script as
a spec, totally on her own. Because of our previous
contacts, I agreed to read it. I then spent some
time going over it page by page, line by line, so
she could do a rewrite. Then I submitted it to
Sunbow, purely as a spec, with no guarantees
anything would come of it. But they liked it and
bought it, giving Ellen her first professional
credit. She has since gone on to a full pro career.
She didn't stick with animation, but has published
novels and for the past ten years or so has been
producing and writing interactive games. She's one
of my dearest friends and a warm, wonderful person.
Anyway, the long answer to your question is that
Ellen picked Kimber and I have no idea why.
Probably because Kimber, as a young and impetuous
character, was the best one of that particular
story."
Q: "How come the friendship between Stormer and
the Holograms was almost completely ignored? There
was only slight hints of that friendship (Of course
after The Bands Break Up) in Britrock and A Father
Should Be..."
A: "Because Stormer is first and foremost a Misfit.
That's where her career and main loyalties lie, and
she's careful not to give away that she's
sympathetic to the band's rivals."
From TO! J 4.8 (March 15, 1999)
Q: "Are you allowed to tell us what your
Beast Wars script, 'Dark Glass,' was about?
Do you plan on writing any more Beast Wars?"
A: "The story editor particularly didn't
want me to talk about the events in 'Dark Glass'.
I don't follow the show, so I don't know whether
I'd be giving away thing I shouldn't. The best
course of action is for me to keep my mouth shut.
I have no plans to write for the series."
From TO! J 4.19 (June 7, 1999)
Q: "I know you cannot send out the picture
of the Stinger doll prototypes. Could you tell
me which face mold is used for each of the
Stinger Dolls? If they are the same as the doll
molds used in 1986-1987. And do you know how
Graphix looked? Or was she not that developed.
And was there an idea on how the Mongrels would
have looked? (Hair color, names, would the twins
been identical)"
A: "I don't recall seeing any photos of the
Stinger prototypes and I don't know anything
about the making of the dolls themselves. I
don't think Graphix was ever designed and the
Mongrels only ever existed in my head. I don't
have a particular image in mind for the
Mongrels, as I only got as far as working on
a basic outline for that story."
